As a new hobby, I’ve been exploring the fountain style sodas and their fascinating history. Hand made soda fist came to the US in the early 1800s, by 1880 it was an outright sensation becoming a hallmark of the american lifestyle. Today soda has a bad rap, corrupted by the sugar pushers to make a profit, the drinks contain a deadly amount of sugar. Even a thin person like myself can put up a gut by having just one can of coke a day. That’s a far way from the cure alls and health remedies that pharmacists envisioned.

The lemon ice cream soda pictured has less than half the sugar of same product made with bottle pop. It uses agava which has a glycemic index of less a quarter of that of table sugar. Makes you feel better about that late night snack.

There is so much to learn about soda, making flavours from scratch, collecting the supplies and other secret ingredients. One day I guess I’ll get a better seltzer making system, but for now the biggest challenge is finding phosphoric acid here in Canada.

Enjoy this little old time soda fountain comedy video.

In this little clip I was required to remove an outdated element of the sign in front of a store. The challenge was that the timelapse was already done and object were then moving high speed in the foreground. This is a short clip showing the process.

The clip show first the original footage, the modified version, then the final colour corrected version.

Its 6×7 minute webseries follows a lowly vampire in his daily battles of office politics. His boss can’t quite grasp the fact that this employee is a vampire, a fact that baffles him as much as the office phone system. One’s a blood sucker, the other’s a vampire – Boss and Vampire.

You’ll see in this spot that the footage needed a lot of work to bring it to a professional level. The image was milky and shaky because it was shot with a DSLR without any rigging. The colour correction was done in Aftereffects with Colorista II.

The extremely talented artist Ian Langdon came to me looking for a solution to quickly build an online presence for his art. He isn’t a web coder and was starting from scratch. He also didn’t want to use any text on the site. Every thing you see there is an image.

In one short session he was makeing his own pages and post, uploading his own images and managing his thumbnail galleries. This is a great example of the $200 small business web solution offer.

A good friend Stephanie Dickison put a flame under her career about 4 years ago with a simple static site I helped her set up. Since then she’s become a highly sought after reviewer of restaurants and products. Her blog, The Knack, is a fantastic exploration of unique products and her book is a lighthearted tale of her life as a freelance writer.

With all this success it was clearly time to revitalize her old static website, and she came to me looking to get things up and running quick with wordpress. Three days later, her site was up and presentable to the world.

The magazine style site is very slick indeed, but contained a number of bugs and undesired functionality. I was able to clean up the template and coach her on managing the site, which is now totally in her hands.

This project demonstrates the democratic power of wordpress, and is a great example of my $200 quick and dirty small business website package.
